About this service
UT Medicine's Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation service offers advanced, noninvasive care for adults (18 and older) experiencing treatment-resistant major depressive disorder. TMS may be recommended when antidepressant medications have not been effective or are poorly tolerated due to side effects.
TMS uses magnetic pulses to stimulate the area of the brain known to be underactive in depression, offering a safe alternative to electroconvulsive therapy without the need for anesthesia or sedation. Patients can return to daily activities immediately after treatment.
TMS at UT Medicine is FDA-approved for major depressive disorder. Please note that this service does not offer electroconvulsive therapy.
Our treatment approach
At UT Medicine, we take an integrated, multidisciplinary approach to your care. This means you will benefit from the expertise of multiple specialists across a variety of disciplines caring for you in one place — avoiding the need to schedule multiple appointments with providers at locations all over the city.
UT Medicine is anchored by Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin, where we collaborate with colleagues to apply leading-edge research, diagnostic and treatment techniques to the diagnosis and treatment of your condition. Advanced imaging and lab testing are also available on-site if needed.
Appointment Information
We’re committed to making your experience as smooth and supportive as possible. Before your visit, our team will help you understand what to expect, including a detailed consultation and coordination of any records or authorizations needed to support your care.
For the TMS service, your care team will review any relevant treatment history within the UT Medicine system and request additional information from your referring provider. If you’ve received care elsewhere, you may be asked to complete an Authorization to Receive Medical Records form to help us gather this information.
Your initial appointment will be scheduled once all relevant information has been received and reviewed. During this 60–90-minute consultation, your care team will assess your candidacy for TMS and begin creating a personalized treatment plan.
